Work and Wages

Concept Of Work and Wages

Welcome students to my new blog in aptitude series. In this blog we are going to clear the concept of work and wages. Work and wages is the widely asked topic in every exam from past few years. Let's revise it.

What is Work?

Work is a certain set of tasks or activities to achieve result. We can write work in mathematics as:

  • If any person complete his/her work in N days, then total amount of work done in 1 day is given by = 1/N.
  • Similarly, if another person complete work in M days, then also total work done in 1 day is given by = 1/M.
  • From above two situations we can conclude that those two persons complete (1/N + 1/M) amount of work in 1 day.
  • In question if their is comparison of work and efficiency then use formula:
    M1*D1*H1*E1 / W1 = M2*D2*H2*E2 / W2
    Where,
    M = Number of workers
    D = Number of days
    H = Number of working hours in a day
    E = Efficiency of workers
    W = Units of work
  • Work done is directly proportional to the time and efficiency.
    Work Done = Efficiency * Time Taken.

Let us understand the concept of Work with example.

Que: The time taken by prasad and neha to complete work is 4 days & 8 days respectively, then what will be the time taken by both to complete the same amount of work.
Solution:

Prasad completed work in 4 days so the total work done in one day will be = 1/4.
Neha completed work in 8 days so the total work done in one day will be = 1/8.
Therefore, work done by neha and prasad in one day will be = 1/4 + 1/8 = 12/32.
But,
Time taken = 1 / Work Done.
Hence, time taken by them to complete total work is 2.6 days.

I hope you understood concept of Work neatly now move towards Wages.

What is Wage?

Wage means the payment or something that we got in return after completing work. Wage written as follows:

  • If any person does his or her work in N days then total wage given is-
    Total Wage = N * Wage of 1 day of pereson.
  • Wages are directly proportional to work. That is, more wage will be recieved for more work.
  • Wage is indirectly proportional to time period of work by an individual.

Let us understand the concept of Wage with example.

Que: A, B, C does a work for 6500rs. A can do work in 10 days, B in 15 days & C in 20 days. If they work together to do work then what is share of A.
Solution:

Work = LCM(10, 25, 20) = 60 units.
Work done in 1 day:
A = 6 units/day.
B = 4 units/day.
C = 3 units/day.
Share of A = 6/13 * 6500 = 3000 rs.

Here the concept of Wages ends. Do following exercise for more practices.

Practice Questions..

  1. To complete a job, A alone takes 2 more days than A and B together. B alone takes 18 more days than A and B together. Find the time taken if they work together.
  2. Three workers A, B and C are given a job to paint a room. At the end of each day, they are given Rs. 800 collectively as wages. If A worked alone, the work would be completed in 6 days. If B worked alone, the work would be completed in 8 days.If C worked alone, the work would be completed in 24 days. Find their individual daily wages.
